Robert Evans, President and Founder
As founder of Independent Energy Systems in 2001, Robert is passionate about helping to correct human activities that are causing global warming in our local communities and beyond. In addition to guiding the company’s vision and goals, Robert directs the engineering department, oversees product specification, and leads the commercial systems design team. Robert has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas, he holds the company’s California State contractor’s license, and is a NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer ™. Previously Robert worked in the building performance field at Honeywell and has over 13 years of experience as a sales engineer in the industrial process automation industry.
Joel Kauffman, Vice President
Joel oversees the management of sales, marketing and business development. He is a NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer™, Certified Green Building Professional, and has extensive experience in the construction and design of renewable energy systems. Joel serves on the Leadership Committee of the U.S. Green Building Council for the Monterey Branch, and can often be found giving presentations and talks on the topic of renewable energy and solar power at events, schools, and meetings throughout the region. Joel is a graduate of Santa Cruz High School and is passionate about helping his local community reduce its fossil fuel based energy use. Charles Wolff, Construction Manager
As Construction Manager at Independent Energy Systems, Charles brings his incredible attention to detail and commitment to high quality to the next level. He worked as a lead installler for IES for two years, after his three years as a lead installer for Eco Energies in San Jose. He is also a NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer™. His desire to work in a field where he could contribute to the community and benefit the environment brought him to solar some five years ago. Charles lives in Santa Cruz with his wife Rachel and two children. He is passionate about the health of the environment, and hopes that every effort made to preserve the ecological health of our planet will help his kids experience nature's beauty as he has. He also digs surfing and BMXing.
Susan Whitehill, Director of Finance
Susan maintains the financial systems and manages the administrative functions for the company. She graduated from Cal State University Hayward earning a BS in Business with a major in Management Information Systems. Previously, Susan worked for 10 years as a financial systems programmer/analyst for a Silicon Valley company. Susan was the first employee of Independent Energy Systems. She feels great working for a business that is fighting global warming on a daily basis by installing solar in her local community.
Bruce Whitehill, Materials Manager
As Materials and Operations Manager, Bruce brings over 20 years of high-tech experience to the company. Bruce is committed to fighting global warming and increasing our energy independence. He has a BS in Business Management from San Jose State University.
